program
The
New Learning Center has been offering social skills groups since 1994
providing help for children in grades 3 - 8 who struggle with peer
relationships. Children facing rejection or isolation due to shyness,
impulsivity, learning disabilities, ADHD, lack of assertiveness and
other issues participate in creative activities, role playing and skill
building. Emphasis is placed on verbal and nonverbal communication skills,
understanding the effective use of language, the ability to 'read' a
situation, and understanding feedback cues.
Social skills difficulties
can have many different roots. Temperament, attention problems, language
or non-verbal learning problems and anxiety can all interfere with handling
social situations. The New Learning Center Social Skills groups focus
on communication skills, non-verbal behavior, friendship skills and
specific techniques (such as handling teasing, problem solving and relaxation)
to help children in school and in other social settings. These
groups also focus on "self talk", what children say to themselves that
leads them to anticipate or magnify negative experiences, and help children
identify positive ways of thinking that enhance confidence. Each ten
session group course is limited to a specific age group and is customized
to fit the needs of those children participating. The social skills
program includes two individualized parent meetings, written mid-session
and final progress reports with strategies and recommendations for follow-up..
