"DIVORCE
FROM THE CHILD'S PERSPECTIVE"
A new program at
the New Learning Center helps children going through the divorce of
their parents feel security and continuity. This short, solution-oriented
intervention addresses the real problems children face as their parents
divorce. It reassures them that their parents and siblings will be there
for them despite the upheavals of family change. The goal is for children
to know that they can feel "OK" and rebuild with those they love. According
to Ms. Linda Keller, L.C.S.W., L.M.F.T., "Our
goal is to help children re-establish a sense of balance and well-being,
which has been disrupted by the separation. Often, we will see siblings
together, or children and adults in whatever combinations are most helpful
and constructive. The Center offers a comfortable environment to make
them feel at home. Younger children can have toys or snacks, while older
children are given the atmosphere of caring and respect they need."
The New Learning Therapy Center has offered many children's programs,
including Social Skills groups, evaluations, parenting consultations
and family counseling. "We intend this program to expand our role as
a community resource. In addition to our already existing free call-ins
the second Wednesday of each month, we will have books available to
parents, offer talks, and will work with parents in every way possible,"adds
Ms. Keller. For information, call the New Learning Therapy Center at
203-226-0100.
