The
New Learning Center offers the following programs for children:
COMPREHENSIVE
EVALUATIONS
The New Learning Center offers a full range of comprehensive and targeted
evaluations for attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities,
emotional and developmental problems, and evaluative consultations.
Our staff works in partnership with individuals, families and schools
to provide evaluations which result in individualized plans.
HELP
FOR PARENTS
Parents
need to function as a team in goal setting and decision making regarding
their children's concerns. They need clarity in their understanding
of the challenges they face, the options available, and the directions
to choose. The NLC offers brief consultations on common parenting issues
such as agreeing on expectations, setting limits, creating a behavioral
plan at home, handling sibling rivalry, working with schools, handling
teenagers, step-parenting, and co-parenting after divorce.
The New Learning
Center also offers a FREE monthly call in, every second Wednesday of
the month. Click here for more information...
HELP
FOR UNDERACHIEVERS
NLC staff
evaluates blocks to achievement and motivation, and works with children,
schools and families to set priorities and individual goals that enhance
motivation and foster success. Evaluation for learning or attention
problems, tutoring services, help with parenting strategies, brief counseling,
and consultation with schools are all available as adjunct services
to this evaluation and assistance.
INDIVIDUAL
AND FAMILY THERAPY
NLC's
multi disciplinary staff offers a full range of therapy services by
caring, licensed professionals with extensive experience in specialties
ranging from early childhood, behavior and developmental problems to
adolescence, step parenting and family therapy, domestic violence and
substance abuse. We encourage family involvement and a positive approach
toward wellness skills.
SOCIAL
SKILLS GROUPS
Any children
having difficulty with friendships and peer relations can benefit from
this program. Many of our group members experience difficulties such
as shyness, attention problems, nonverbal LD, and anxiety. Often these
children are creative and have much to offer, but have developed negative
expectations of other children and lack an understanding of their own
behavior as well as the skills to better handle social situations.

ANGER
AND IMPULSE CONTROL GROUPS
These
groups focus specifically on children ages 8 - 12 who have difficulty
with anger and impulse control, negatively impacting their participation
at school and relationships at home. These children often have difficulty
relating to authority figures, and distinguishing between behavior that
is acceptable with peers and that which is acceptable with adults. This
program helps children learn effective ways to stop, think, and problem
solve before acting.
CHILDREN
HANDLING LOSS
This program
is designed to help children work through loss and grief for a significant
family member, friend or other by exploring basic concepts of death
and grief, to recognize and address feelings, and to offer support in
a safe, comfortable environment. The expressive therapies used will
include art, crafts, music and movement. The group runs 6 - 8 weeks
and is open to ages 6 - 12.
LIAISON
BETWEEN PARENTS AND SCHOOLS
Parents
often feel confused or concerned when dealing with their children's
schools. NLC staff work with parents and schools to form an effective
team, setting and implementing goals for children, creating behavioral
plans to implement at home or school, and helping parents understand
and make most effective use of school meetings, special education and
504 plans. Staff is available to attend school meetings or consult on
specific planning issues.
FILIAL
PARENT TRAINING
Filial
Parent Training teaches parents to use reflective play techniques with
young children to enhance understanding and bonding. It has been
found to be highly effective for children who may be difficult or disruptive
in day care, school or home, have chronic medical conditions, or experience
stress as a result of family transitions. It teaches parents new
skills to effectively respond to their child's emotional needs while
also setting behavioral limits.
